NEW SHOES

Living in New York on peanuts in not cool. Temptations live at every turn. Marc Jacobs sits only streets away and walking past Rag and Bone is a daily occurrence. I nearly ran into the windows of Opening Ceremony on Friday.

So each week to fulfill my cravings for new things without sending myself into insolvency I'm allowing myself one purchase from the markets. Today I failed and ended up buying two, but these Marc Jacobs wedges, how could I not!

FASHION IN FOCUS

{Image: Vogue via Le Fashion}
Breaking into the fashion industry, particularly in photography, isn't easy.  That's why Westfield Chermside has come up with 'Fashion in Focus' a competition designed to expose emerging fashion photographers in Queensland.
The competition aims to profile amateur photographers through an exhibition which in turn, provides all important exposure to fashion media.
This is the last chance to enter as the closing date is Monday 23 August. To enter, send your name, email and a brief bio with two high res JPEG images showcasing your fashion photography to fashionassistant@au.westfield.com.
Four of the best entries will be selected to experience a 1/2 day shoot with a professional model, hair and makeup and stylist plus a full wardrobe. Location is up to you so get creative!
The results will be revealed at an exclusive judging event attended by fashion press, VIPS and Vogue photographer Fran Flynn. The winner will receive a $2500 gift card to spend on photographic equipment and runners up will each receive a $500 gift card.

Good Luck!

MULBERRY STREET

After weeks of searching (minimal by New York standards, I'm told) we've finally found an a place to call home. Until we move in to the new Williamsburg apartment, Mulberry Street is home for now. This all-encompassing crazy street is a twenty four hour circus- so we discovered on our {sleepless} first night- but it feels so good after three weeks of living out of suitcases to finally unpack!

Nowness...

A few people have asked about what I'm doing in New York. Truth be told I've never quite shaken the wanderlust brought about by traveling three years ago and after two years living in Australia, I decided to give New York a go {I've been told I like to make things difficult for myself- I'd probably agree} .

I've just started an internship {I'm sure internship 101 is not publicly writing about the company so I'm not going to say too much}  working alongside some fashion giants such as US Vogue, W and Numero and I also recently met with casting director and blogger Natalie Joos.
Whilst we were talking she mentioned an exciting project with website Nowness.com. I hadn't seen the results until The Glamourai posted a feature, but the crux is that Nowness sent Natalie to Brimfield Market in Massachusetts, alongside French model AurĂ©lie Claudel and photographer Martien Mulder. Together they created this amazing photostory around the vintage treasures on offer, which can be viewed here and here. The next markets take place 7-12 September.

GOING FOR A SONG

As anyone who reads this knows, I like nothing more than a Saturday morning spent unearthing vintage finds and then telling anyone and everyone who will listen about my prudent purchases. So imagine my delight at the Hells Kitchen Flea Markets

The markets themselves aren't huge which means they are easy to navigate and don't overwhelm. If you have the patience, the best gems are found on the stalls that literally resemble {for those who know it} the inside of Primark- that is, tables laden with heaped clothes that require a needle in a haystack approach. I found a vintage Christian Dior camel blazer {perfect for this 35c heat} and a silk shirt by The Limited, both for an unbelievable price.

I've heard Brooklyn Flea and The Garage are both brilliant too, any tips?

I'm quickly discovering flats are the only way to go around New York - so much for the extensive heel collection.

We recently discovered Mcnally Jackson, an amazing little book shop on Prince Street. Despite the fact there's not even time to stop and think in New York, we stacked up regardless before Cafe Gitane for brunch- still pinching myself to believe this is all real!

FINDING THE PERFECT APARTMENT IN NEW YORK IS....

Finding the perfect apartment in New York {or even something that just resembles decent} is  a full time job. I'm glued to Craigslist and the refresh key. Wild excitement as a new posting appears quickly transforms to downright disappointment on finding that the bathtub is in the kitchen {really, is this normal?} the bed is actually {a very comfortable} pull out sofa or the studio sublet, which on first impressions appears unalloyed perfection, small print reveals a 30 year old male comes with. I think I've had it good too long.

Yesterday, after finding the perfect East Village exposed brick-wall studio going for a song, and, after many {desperate} emails and no reply, we gave up and wandered Central Park in the heat, and remembered the reason we came here.

Then we went and looked at a tiny box apartment where you had to hang your computer out the window to get internet signal. Thankfully, after we wandered the streets of East Village, found amazing little shops, ate good food, we remembered the reason we came here.
